A representative of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella read the decree: “Know ye that whereas for certain things done and committed by you to our disservice, you are condemned and obligated by our Council to provide us for a twelvemonth with two equipped caravels (ships) at your own proper charge and expense.” So, on May 23, 1492, the people of Palos gathered in the town square to learn their punishment. Perhaps it was smuggling, or failing to pay tribute to the crown. Exactly what they had done is lost to history. The residents of Palos had committed some great crime against the rulers of Spain. ![]()
